Today was the first day of class and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had enrolled in two other senior seminar classes before I was able to finally register in this one after being waitlisted at first. Even with the class being nearly three hours long it felt like it went by quickly. During class we went over the syllabus and what to expect for the semester ahead. One thing that stuck with me is that we’ll have to make a 20–60 minute presentation at some point in the class. I’m not really worried about it as I’ve made a ton of presentation at this point in college, but rather what it would be on. I’m sure I’ll figure out something and I’ll constantly be keeping it in mind during each class over the semester.
After the syllabus, we messed around with chatgpt for a bit and saw some of the things it can do with writing. I have used it before especially for coding and math assistance, but never really writing. It can certainly do some interesting things to the writing that you provide it with. One of the ways we used it was to change the tone of a short bio we had to write for our first assignment. Chatgpt could change the tone of angry to humorous and anything in between. I imagine it’s also a powerful tool to correct and improve writing in the same way it does coding.
One other thing that shocked me was that it’s encouraged to use chatgpt within the class for assignments. This is the first time I’ve heard of such a thing in one of my own classes, but I have heard from others recently. I think it makes sense though because now that these large language models such as chatgpt are going to become more commonplace in our daily lives, it is best to be accustomed to using them rather than shutting them out.
The last part of the class involved getting our personal website/blog created under the Roger William’s University web hosting service and install WordPress. WordPress is a web content management system which can do all sorts of things, and in this case is to manage a student-created blog for the class. During the installation process, the entire class became stuck at 95% which continued until the end of the class. By the time class was over, nobody was able to successfully install it. Hopefully we can manage to get it done during the next class to make our first post.
