At least 10 feet in diameter. Yes, you read that right. These massive dishes as pictured to the top left were around properties and businesses alike to provide access to television. Nowadays, it’s a simple cable that runs into your home. And if a satellite dish is still in use, it’s most likely only a fraction of the size now. This shows the dramatic shift in technology when going from analog to digital television
When I first heard that fact, I really had a hard time believing it. I tried to think hard to a time in my life when I had witnessed such a thing. Then it clicked; every morning of my elementary school life we drove past an Xfinity service center which was then Comcast pictured on the bottom left. In the now green and open grassy area, was once a massive upwards facing satellite enclosed within a fence and a layer of barbed wire at the top.
That was some time back in the late 2000’s and early 2010’s. It has since been removed and replaced with grass and soil, while a cellular tower, seen in the far right of the image sits on top of the building in a much less intrusive manner.
